I am absolutely thrilled to welcome you to the very first episode of my brand-new podcast, Mental GPS with Dr. Jana: Navigating the Mind! This show has been in the works for a long time, and for our inaugural episode, I wanted to pull back the curtain and explain a bit about who I am and exactly why I am doing this.
For those who may be new to my work, I am Dr. Jana Price-Sharps from Dr-Jana.com. I have been practicing as a psychologist since the early 2000s, and prior to that, I spent a wealth of time working in drug and alcohol treatment. Over the course of my career, I have worked extensively with individuals dealing with severe depression, suicidal ideation, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Currently, my daily practice is heavily focused on supporting first responders, combat veterans, emergency services personnel, and their families.
While working with these specialized populations is incredibly rewarding, I also teach courses and find that people across the general population are truly struggling right now. I wanted to expand my message because there are so many wonderful, simple things you can do to achieve a significantly better quality of life. My philosophy is straightforward: if I can help you make just one small change that shifts your entire life or your family system, that is awesome.
What to Expect From This Show
We all have busy lives, and the last thing you need is another dense, endless lecture. Here is what makes this podcast a different kind of tool for your mental toolkit:
- Short, Focused Episodes: Most of my podcasts are only going to be 10 to 15 minutes long. While I might occasionally bring a guest in for a slightly longer conversation, the core reason these episodes are short is intentional. I want a single, clear point to be articulated so you have the time to really think about it. When a podcast rushes through too many ideas at once, the best points get lost, and I don’t want these tools to get lost for you.
- Action Over Just Insight: The ultimate goal of this podcast is to help people be happy. While understanding why you do what you do can certainly be useful at times, this show isn’t focused strictly on insight. The true focus is on actively changing your life, so you can wake up in the morning, feel happy, and know that you can handle whatever the day brings.
- Stop Waiting on Others: Your life simply won’t change unless you make changes. So often, I see people waiting around for their friends, fiances, spouses, or colleagues to change so that they can finally feel better. Unfortunately, those people may never change. Don’t wait for them. This podcast is here to help you figure out what you can do, write out a concrete plan, and take action.
“The focus is on changing your life, so you wake up in the morning and you’re happy.”

Everything I talk about on this show won’t be immediately pertinent to you today, but it might be incredibly relevant a year and a half from now. If you hear a strategy or technique that works for you, I want you to grab onto it and run with it!
